When is the best time to visit the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica?

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is beautiful and inviting year-round, with a unique climate that differs from the Pacific coast. While there isn't a well-defined dry season, the driest months typically occur from February to March and again from September to October. These periods offer a bit more sunshine and less rain, making them ideal for outdoor activities. However, the region's lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife can be enjoyed at any time of year, so there's always a good time to visit.

Is it easy to travel around the area?

Regular buses run from the end of the road, which is just a 10-minute walk away, making it convenient to explore nearby attractions and heading in the direction of either Puerto Viejo or Puerto Limón. Additionally, you can take taxis for a quicker ride, or you can join Babs on her shopping trips to town. Whether you prefer public transportation, a taxi, or a friendly ride with Babs, getting around is simple and hassle-free.

What is there to do in the area?

The area around Camping Babsita offers a diverse range of activities for every traveller. We can arrange a number of tours from the campsite - see our tours page here for more information. Nature enthusiasts can visit the nearby Sloth Sanctuary or the Jaguar Rescue Center to learn about local wildlife conservation efforts. Explore the Cahuita National Park, known for its stunning coastline and rich biodiversity, perfect for hiking and wildlife spotting.

For those seeking adventure, the Caribbean coast is renowned for its excellent surfing spots, ideal for both beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Enjoy swimming in the clear, warm waters or immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Puerto Viejo, known for its lively nightlife and cultural scene.

Can I buy food nearby?

Yes, there are convenient options for purchasing food near our campsite. You can take a short bus or taxi ride to Penshurst, where you'll find food shops for your grocery needs. Additionally, within walking distance from the campsite, there are two sodas offering local cuisine and a nearby bar where you can enjoy a drink. For a refreshing treat, plentiful coconuts grow locally, providing a taste of Costa Rica's natural bounty. There's also regularly somebody from the campsite heading to Penshurst for groceries, ensuring you have easy access to essentials during your stay.

Are pets welcome?

We love animals here at Camping Babsita and welcome well behaved pets to accompany you. We have seven resident dogs who live around the site, all are friendly and approachable!

Is it safe for solo travellers?

Camping Babsita provides a unique and safe base to explore the surrounding area and we regularly welcome solo travellers who find it a safe and welcoming base for their adventures. You may arrive alone but you will soon find yourself part of a welcoming and homely community.

What wildlife will I see?

Camping Babsita offers a rich diversity of wildlife for nature enthusiasts to discover. Keep an eye out for our resident sloths lounging in the trees and howler monkeys regularly moving through the site. You'll also encounter a variety of birds, crabs and vibrant butterflies!

From the river or sea, depending on the season, you can often observe turtles, while cayman make a regular appearance.

Are there mosquitoes?

Please note that, as with much of Central America, mosquitoes are common in the area, so we recommend bringing bug spray or repellent to ensure a comfortable outdoor experience.
